convivial
/kənˈvɪviəl/
adjective: convivial - of an atmosphere or event) friendly, lively, and enjoyable.

A mild autumn evening saw a gathering of Anselmians from across the generations convening at the RAF Club on Pall Mall for the London Dinner 2025. It was a splendid assembly and a great mix of individuals sharing memories, news and not a little wine.
We were fortunate to host as our guest speaker for the evening Naa Acquah, recently appointed Chair of the University of Manchester Alumni Association. We are grateful for Naa delaying her departure for a weekend away so that she could be with us at the dinner, her first external engagement in her new role.
Naa spoke with passion about her route to the role and how coming to study in Manchester as a “London girl” changed her life and how she is now tied to the city and the university. She spoke about her motivation for being involved with the alumni and how she sees her role. It was the first time she had met with our alumni and we sincerely hope that this will be the start of a beautiful relationship.
In his address Association Chair Jon Boddy posed the question to the diners, “Why are you here?” He explained that this wasn’t meant as a deep philosophical exploration of the meaning of life, but more a way of highlighting the deep and lasting influence that St Anselm Hall has had, and continues to have, upon everyone who has experienced it. The fact that the 2025 gathering drew current Anselmians alongside recent graduates, and those from the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s highlights the enduring fondness for time in hall.
The memories of time spent in hall are personal to each individual, but there are common themes that unite us all. The fact that Motin Ng, current head of the student body, was there and spoke of life in hall today is evidence that Slems remains relevant and continues to have a positive influence on the lives of young people finding their way in life – as it did for all of us.
The dinner was completed in style when Bill Halson, in PG Wodehouse terms, our senior member, with huge enthusiasm proposed the final toast of, “Floreat Aula Sancti Anselmi”.
Thanks must got to Doug Henderson and Esperanza Hughes-Salinas for all their hard work in arranging and coordinating the London Dinner 2025. The fact that it was such a successful occasion thoroughly enjoyed by all those attending is down to their efforts. They have successfully passed the cat herding and multiple plate spinning course!
