Association Sports Day
The Annual Association Sports Day is held in Manchester on the Saturday at the start of the Easter holidays – it is held both to welcome back former students back to Hall, and to introduce current members of Hall to some of the Association membership.
The Hall forms sports teams take on their alumni counterparts in what are normally fiercely contested (pride is at stake!) but friendly encounters. In the past the Association have managed to put out two football sides, leading to a round robin contest, and altogether over a hundred Anselmians take part.
Spectators are more than welcome – one recent old member described his match day position as “I’ll be the one on the touchline eating an Abdul’s kebab”. The matches are usually held at the University’s main Firs sports ground, with changing facilities and a bar for after-match chat in the Firs pavilion. In the evening, dinner follows a drinks reception and concludes with the drinks in the bar.
The return to the Cellar Club always provides another opportunity for current Anselmians to mix with their predecessors, before most of the participants head off to dance the night away to ‘cheesy’ music. This is always an enjoyable event, for both recent alumni and slightly more mature Anselmians who have not yet hung up their boots; the last event had an age range of 18-49!
The Association has a specific mailing list for this event, comprising those who have played one of the three sports for the Hall in the last ten years – if you would like to be added to this list please write to the Association, using the information on the Contact Us page.
